The Yakima River

Flowing from the forested slopes of Washington's Cascade Mountains, through the Kittitas Valley's rich pasture and farm land and into the desert hills of the Yakima River Canyon, the Yakima River provides over 65 miles of prime, diverse trout water. An average of 300 sunny days per year combined with three reservoirs which keep the river cool in summer insure a fertile environment where trout and insect populations thrive. The resurrection of trout fishing in the Yakima began in 1983 when a selective fishery designation was placed on the river from the mouth of Wilson creek to the Teanaway River, and all planting of hatchery fish was stopped in favor of natural reproduction. In 1986 bait was prohibited from the Roza dam to Easton and in 1988 the river from Roza dam to Easton was designated as a selective fishery. The final step in creating a quality trout fishery was taken in 1990 with the designation of the Yakima River from Roza dam to Easton as a catch and release fishery. These changes have allowed the Yakima to realize it's potential and become Washington's only blue ribbon trout fishery.
